Helplines and Talk Lines in Greater Montreal

Many community organizations in Quebec offer free, anonymous and confidential telephone listening services. Talk lines and helplines are intended to break the isolation by allowing someone to share his or her psychological situation with another person.
Some lines are general, which means that the organization is not specialized in any particular area and responds to all listening requests. Other helplines are specialized for a specific clientele (youth, seniors, LGBTQ+, etc.) or a specific subject (mental health, bereavement, addictions, etc.). If a specialized helpline meets your needs and serves your territory, try this service first, otherwise the general lines will help you.
In many organizations, this service is provided mainly by volunteers, but other organizations rely on counsellors, particularly for specialized lines. In all cases, counsellors and volunteers are trained to, among other things, learn the basics of active listening to provide empathic and nonjudgmental help.
Although most helplines offer services only by phone, some are also offering help via chat, text messages or email.
